About the Competition

Hosting by Society for Science, the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge (JIC) is the nation’s premier STEM research competition for middle school students. It showcases student independent research and offers and average of $4 million in prizes annually.


Like other Society of Science challenges, Students in 6th, 7th or 8th grade interested in participating must first complete a science fair project and compete in a Society affiliate fair in the United States or a U.S. territory. Timeline

Typically, sudents compete in an affiliated fair Jan - April, then the qualified ones get nominated to compete in JIC.
